The Playground is the Best Gym You’ll Ever Find
As I step out onto my backyard balance board, the first rays of morning sunlight dance across the surface. Barefoot, I stand on one leg, feeling a familiar surge of energy and challenge. This isn’t just exercise; it’s joyful movement that has transformed my life—and yours can be too.
At 85 years old, I’ve been practicing daily balance training for over five decades. My journey began with a simple observation: the playground is not just a place where children play; it's also one of the best gyms you'll ever find. As an ex-UCF professor and founder of Never Leave The Playground, I've seen firsthand how movement can build confidence and independence well into our golden years.

It all started back in my 30s when a friend introduced me to balance training after I suffered from a minor stroke. Initially skeptical, I soon discovered that the more I played, the stronger and more independent I became. Over time, I noticed not only physical improvements but also a newfound zest for life that came from regular play.
The Science or Wisdom
Your body doesn’t know the difference between exercise and play— but your brain does. When you engage in playful activities like those found on a playground, you’re stimulating both your mind and body. Research shows that these kinds of exercises can significantly improve balance, coordination, and overall well-being. For example, a study published in the Journal of Aging and Physical Activity demonstrated that regular balance training can reduce falls by up to 40% among older adults.
Practical Steps
Cross Crawl Exercises
One of the most effective activities is the cross crawl exercise. Stand on one leg with your opposite arm reaching over to touch the knee of the supporting leg. This works on single-leg stance and motor planning, essential for improving balance. Here’s a simple way to start:
1. **Choose Your Surface**: Find a stable surface like an indoor hallway or your backyard.
2. **Stand on One Leg**: Start by standing on one foot with the other foot slightly off the ground.
3. **Cross Crawl Movement**: Reach across with the opposite arm and touch the knee of the supporting leg.
4. **Repeat**: Do this several times, then switch legs.
Juggling
Juggling is another fantastic way to challenge your balance and coordination. Start with a few bean bags or lightweight items that you can easily catch and release.
1. **Start Simple**: Hold two objects in one hand and try to throw them up and catch them.
2. **Add Another Object**: Once comfortable, add a third object to juggle.
3. **Practice Regularly**: Consistency is key here; even 5-10 minutes daily can make a big difference.
Fun Balance Games
You can also find fun balance games on playgrounds or at home. For instance:
1. **Bean Bag Toss**: Use bean bags and throw them into a target.
2. **Balancing Sticks**: Place small sticks on your feet and try to walk with them balanced.
3. **Hopscotch**: Draw hopscotch squares in the backyard and practice jumping and landing softly.
Balance isn’t about standing still—it’s about moving with confidence. I’ve watched people in their 70s and 80s transform in weeks, becoming more active and independent. If it’s not fun, you won’t do it. And if you don’t do it, nothing changes.
